Here is this week’s dose from Chicago’s Tastemakers! Each week we check in with our 60+ Chicago movers and shakers to see what’s going on around town. Stay tuned each week to get each week’s wrap and next week’s view!

Our weekly Tastemaker Spotlight is going to help you lovely people get to know our Tastemakers a little bit better, so they’re more than just a name online bringing you the hottest events the city has to offer!

This week you get to meet Chess Hubbard from UR Chicago! Chess runs UR Chicago Online, is co-founder of Life During Wartime (Chicago’s longest running indie dance party), and is one half of Cenob1te (EDM duo) and Moneypenny (electro-pop duo). When she’s not creating and/or promoting music, art, and nerdery, she enjoys hockey, RPGs, and Magic: The Gathering.

What is a personality trait in others that really irritates you?
There are so many, but if I had to choose one it would be humble bragging. Social media has really put a spotlight on humble bragging. Everywhere I turn, someone is posting a humble brag! Make it stop!

If the average human life span was 40 years, how would you live your life differently?
I already live my life like I might die at any time, which is why I didn’t choose a very conventional route…

What would you like your last meal be?
I would hope that it consisted of a lot of various grilled meats, onion rings, my mom’s mashed potatoes, fresh tropical fruits, and a dessert of rice krispie treats and Hawaiian shaved ice. Damnit, now I am hungry.

If you could have any non-traditional pet, what would it be?
A shark. Right now I am into great hammerheads, but I also like blue, bull, tiger, and great whites as well.

What upcoming event are you pumped for?
Dead Fame BASS!

JMA Promotions shares some music industry news:
Over the last week we had Ryan Carey travel to Portland for the Little Hurricane concert. Their first time in Portland and a sold out club of 300 due to the support from KNRK radio. If you’re not watching or listening to Little Hurricane we recommend it.

We caught Class Actress once again in Los Angeles at the Echo. We’ve now seen Elizabeth and her band several times. They keep getting better and better. A packed club as well.

Rachel McClusky performed her showcase for the music supervisors at Paramount Pictures last Thursday “on the lot”. She was accompanied by songwriter and percussionist Jay Ollero and guitarist Keaton Simon. We think there will be some film placement coming out of this as they really nailed the 5 songs/25 minute set. Watch this girl and her upcoming shows in Nashville, Dayton, and Chicago all in the next 30 days including opening for Lupe Fiasco.

Finally, it was Grammy week in Los Angeles. Some of us were there and always the most exciting week of the year. We saw Bruce Springsteen’s rehearsal as part of a sneak preview on Friday, and attended the cool Paramount friends and family party watching Fitz and the Tantrums as DJ’s! The McClusky girls went to the Grammy’s and reported back on the spectacular night for Adele, Foo Fighters, Bon Iver, Kanye etc.

Really can’t talk about the entire week without mentioning the sadness all through the entertainment industry on the death of Whitney Houston Saturday. It happens all too often where one of our icons’ life is shortened through a tragic situation. The press coverage was respectful but nonetheless it was still hugely tragic.

If this week is anywhere near back to normal, then it’s about Valentine’s Day, Andrew Bell at SPACE, Sharon Van Etten at Lincoln Hall, and Flogging Molly at the Aragon. See you next week.

Ah, Valentines Day, love, coupling, smooches… ’tis the season. Christian lore and Wikipedia tells us that St. Valentine himself was arrested and imprisoned after being caught marrying Christian couples. Apparently helping out Christians was such a big no-no in Rome at the time, that Val was stoned and beaten with clubs; when that failed to kill him, he was publicly beheaded as warning to those who would disobey the emperor….now who wants chocolates and a prix fixe!? Regardless of why we celebrate the day, Do312′s got some decapi-tastic (yep I said it) events for you and your loved one(s) so forget the Garfield card and the Whitman’s sampler, express your bonds by going out and getting your special someone well fed, entertained, and shit-faced on a weekday. We can think of no better way to say… amore.
