Here is this week’s dose from Chicago’s Tastemakers! Each week we check in with our 60+ Chicago movers and shakers to see what’s going on around town. Stay tuned each week to get each week’s wrap and next week’s view!

Our weekly Tastemaker Spotlight will let you get to know our Tastemakers a bit better because they’re more than a name online, they’re bringing you the hottest events Chicago has to offer!

This week you get to meet Melinda McIntire! Melinda is a local Chicago writer and blogger. You can find her co-authoring the blog solointhesecondcity.com, writing at melindamac.com and RedEye ‘Hoods, and living out her last few days as a twenty-something. She is the co-curator/producer/host of the new Solo in the Second City reading series at Cobra Lounge. She is scared of birds, can’t snap her fingers, and is searching for the man and/or Manhattan of her dreams. She loves hipsters with nerdy glasses and skinny jeans.

What cartoon character is most like you?
Daria for sure. I am a child of the ’90s and definitely spent my high school years wearing flannel and Doc Martens. I love her attitude and anti-establishment ideals that we all had in the late ’90s.

What part of pop culture do you wish would just go away?
Reality TV depicting women as bitches, whores, desperate, and slutty. I mean how many seasons of Flava Flav can one person watch? Disgusting. Ladies, if we’re going to fight over anyone, let’s make it Taye Diggs or Ryan Gosling, please. Flava Flav? Not worth it.

What is your ideal comfort food?
Panang curry with noodles. Or Monical’s Pizza from Central Illinois where I grew up (with french dressing on top).

If you could be invisible, how would you utilize your power?
I think I’d follow Common around. I’m in love with him for some reason, though I’d like to find out more about that reasoning.

What is your favorite article from the past month?
Definitely my commentary on the Hazards of Dating Hipsters. I read this piece at our first Solo in the Second City reading last Monday, and it’s all no lies.

Psalm One has been having a pretty great 2012 so far, and Dre Day was no exception!
In music, as in life, one searches for something deemed “ultimate”. Whether you are the audiophile steeped in big cappuccino mugs and streaming premieres. Or the commuter confined to radio plays, we’re all trying to keep the dialogue of life burning bright. Especially in winter when wonderment is usually left to drool filled daydreams of warmth, while we maintain the look of “busy” lost in our digital-selves. If you’re like me you’re prospecting for the next sonic bedfellow whose discovery you may uniquely claim as your own. Ava Luna is my latest “ultimate” infatuation; the Brooklyn septet immerses their audience in a modern interpretation of R&B/Soul unlike anything I’ve heard of late. With its precise-percussion and no-wave tones they assemble songs that scream pop without immersing the listener in prevision, but rather bewilderment. Their new LP Ice Level shows off their prowess and vision with gorgeous harmonies that melt a top fulfilling rhythms. The erraticism is plotted and punctuated, instilling the listener with a jazz that makes you want to jump. With each listen discovery is imminent… So I was extremely excited when the band, freshly signed to Infinite Best Recordings, was stoked to answer some of my questions just in time for their show this Friday, February 17th at the Empty Bottle with sibling(s) Twin Sister.

DO312 - What is the root of the band name Ava Luna and what is the motive of the group? Why are you creating the soundscape that you are?

Nathan – Ava Luna is something that we worked out phonetically, no (specific) meaning. It was based off Carlos’s original bedroom recording project, Ava. Around 2006 we heard about another indie band in the Midwest called Ava so to avoid trouble we spent about a month brainstorming random syllables before settling on Luna.

I wouldn’t necessarily call what we do a soundscape. The arrangement with the vocals and synths is the first thing you’ll notice, but I think if there’s anything evocative in our music so far it’s based in the songwriting itself rather than anything we are doing texturally. I think a significant way we can develop from here is to do more with textures and atmosphere, particularly in the synths and vocals.

Carlos – The words “Ava Luna” sound really symmetrical and lyrical to me.

DO312 - I have been hard pressed to find a concise descriptor for your music. After many hours of research the commonality between each article has been Hip Hop or Rhythm & Bass. However, for me whether rhythmically or harmoniously your music is pure Rise & Bounce… If you were to be self-referential, how would you describe your sound?

Ethan - Noisy electronic soul music, with just enough dissonance to keep the listener on his or her toes.

Carlos – Pop music.

DO312 - You have been writing, producing, releasing, and touring all on your own since the bands conception. How have things changed since signing to Infinite Best Recordings, as well as other forms of representation? Any advice for young artists?

Nathan - For newer bands, I’d say the best advice is to take it slow, work on your own sound, and don’t expect anything to happen based on one awesome show or big-time review, or even a record label. It will almost certainly do very little for your career. You just have to build a network of friends and like-minded musicians over time by playing local shows and touring, 90% of which will feel like a complete waste of time. It sounds like easy advice to follow, but it’s not so simple when you see bands that have been around for like 2 weeks blowing up on blog hype and scene trends and stuff. To some extent you want your music to reflect the environment you’re living in, but it can be hard to stay true to your artistic goals when you’re constantly blitzed with the flavor of the week, on the Internet and at local shows.

DO312 - And how excited is the group for the upcoming/ongoing tour with Twin Sister, the outlook of sustained growth, and 2012 in general?

Ethan – On a scale of 1 to 10, 11!

Nathan - Yeah Twin Sister is a perfect example of a band we all love and respect in terms of what they’ve accomplished with their sound. Not only are they all unfairly talented musicians, but also we’ve known them for a long time and have witnessed the development of their sound. Everything they’ve done has been true to what they were trying to do artistically from the beginning. It’s really inspiring. I think they’ve been able to explore their interests and influences very honestly and directly based as they are out in Long Island as opposed to Brooklyn.

And I heard that this will be their first tour with a dedicated soundperson, which can make a huge difference in what you’re able to accomplish live, especially with complex music like they have. So hopefully we’ll have that to look forward to as well!

DO312 - Have you received any advice from your label mates? If so, would you be so kind to share what any of them had to say?

Carlos – I guess we’ve never really had those kinds of discussions with our label mates. I’ve learned a great deal just by watching them grow, listening closely to their music, paying attention to the decisions they make and learning from that.

DO312 - At least for me, the new LP Ice Level is bit more gritty and grimy… It screams NYC to me much like Aesop Rock’s debut LP Float… A reflective and reflexive confession of what it means to breathe NYC. Am I completely off; do you agree or disagree? If so, can you explain?

Ethan – It’s less a reflection of New York and more a reflection of the personalities of the people involved. Of course our tastes and references have been affected by living here, but there was no self-conscious effort to make a “New York” record. I don’t think we sound much like other things coming out of the same place right now.

Nathan – I do agree that it sounds like a “New York” record, whatever that means. I don’t think it necessarily sounds gritty in the way that early Aesop Rock or some other stuff from that era, but 80’s no-wave, which was a peculiarly New York phenomenon, is certainly an important reference point for our music, so a lot of lo-fi elements are deliberately left in to shape it in that way.

Lyrically it’s mostly about personal experiences of Carlos’s, and I don’t want to speak for him but to me it seems strongly tied to location (i.e. here in New York) and thematically that’s at least as important as the experiences themselves.

Carlos – Several of us grew up in New York. I think spending your whole life in a place like this makes it seems possible for lots of different things to exist in one place, even if they don’t “fit” or don’t make sense. I think that’s the guiding principle of our band — finding the common threads, finding a way to make it make sense.

DO312 - What was the recording and writing process like for Ice Level? Was the approach different from past projects? If so, how and why?

Ethan – The recording process was real easy. All the instrumental tracks were done in a single day, one to three takes apiece. This was only possible because of the grueling and highly iterative process of writing and revising over the course of the past year or two. We’d do a total of two or three rehearsals a week, several hours apiece, poring over every possible permutation of every musical element. By the time we got as far as the studio, most songwriting and arranging decisions had long since been made. This is our first full-length album, so there was definitely a sense of more being at stake than before.

Nathan - I guess I’ll never settle my argument that 3rd Avenue Island was also a full-length album. But this is our first time recording on the dime of a record label as well as in a studio engineered by someone other than Carlos or Julian, so there was stress added on both of those fronts.

DO312 - What were the determinate influences for a song like “Clips” versus the influences for a song like “Wrenning Day”? And can you please speak a little about the lyrical composition of each song?

Carlos - Clips was an experiment in how many drum patterns could be built on top of a “simple beat” — the drums are the real anchors. “Wrenning Day” was similarly built around a drumbeat, but apart from that I feel like it’s not like Clips at all — I feel it’s much more vocally driven. The fact that it’s a duet between Felicia and I was key in deciding how the song should progress from beginning to end… I’d like to think the 2 halves have different personalities.

The lyrics in “Clips”, and my verse in “Wrenning Day”, happen to both be about similar topics. I don’t like to talk about lyrics, but I think the idea is to find ways of saying what you need to say…. words that orbit around a very real meaning without ever giving it away. Felicia wrote the lyrics for her verse so you’ll have to ask her about that!

DO312 - How does the song-writing process work for the group? Are the sonic & lyrical components written succinctly or is it a temperamental process dependent upon how an idea is embraced? What are your specific rolls?

Carlos – Very temperamental. The biggest source of inspiration comes from the tension between what feels natural for each person to play, versus the roles they take within each song’s structure. It’s frustrating sometimes, but it always ends up beautiful in a way nobody could have anticipated.

DO312 - Is Carlos the main proprietor of material or is the group egalitarian when it comes to the poetics and melodies? Explain.

Nathan – Carlos is certainly the main proprietor of the lyrics and melodies. I think those are the two most idiosyncratic aspects of our music. It usually takes me a long time to “get” a melody that he’ll be insisting on from Day 1, and I don’t think any of us understand half the lyrics. The song structures are also kind of free-flowing and weird, but that’s a bit more organically shaped as we debate as a band how we’d like the song to develop. Carlos is very adept at inserting lyrical content in ways that gel the song together after the instrumental portion has been Frankenstein’d together in rehearsals.

DO312 - Your harmonies are beautiful and offset the at times idiosyncratic melodies, what was the thinking behind bringing this to the forefront of your creations? And how difficult, physically & mentally, is it to perform these precise vocal patterns day in and day out on tour? What does the preparation for a performance look like?

Nathan - The vocalists have separate rehearsals from the full band at least once a week, which I’d say is the bare minimum to keep that kind of arrangement at a presentable level for live shows. To me, irrespective of this band’s particular setup with the girl-group type thing, vocal harmonies are one of the most expressive and dramatic elements you can use in a song, whether it’s background chords, call-and-response type stuff, or a number of other devices. So in general vocal harmonies are a very important part of the music I personally find interesting to make.

DO312 - Though I could spend hours talking about each record I have to wrap it up… Have you been contacted to produce any tracks for Hip Hop artists, or rather would you ever consider it? If so, who would be your top 3 to work with and why?

Nathan - We did one track for the up-and-coming rapper Stalley. We played a live show with him and sat in backing him on one song, and at some point after that we were invited to do a remix of one of his songs, which we did and sent to him. Don’t know what became of that… maybe we’re just not cut out to make interesting hip-hop instrumentals!

DO312 - And lastly, what is the one thing you hope to accomplish or attain/retain in 2012?

Nathan – I’m happy with our album’s upcoming release with Infinite Best and the fact that we’re able to play shows across the country so much more easily with our awesome booking agent at The Windish Agency. We booked our own tours for several years, and it becomes easier over time as you meet people in different cities, but no matter what, it’s something that takes a LOT of time, and is very nerve-wracking and strenuous to do as a band. We had several false starts before we put together our first weeklong tour in 2009. And probably half the shows had fewer than 20 people show up. A Tuesday night in Toronto where we played for just the club owner and another freezing night in an isolated warehouse in Providence where just the guy who lived there and 2 friends came will probably haunt me forever. Both of those situations involved other bands dropping off the day of the show as we were driving to the city, and that’s the way it is sometimes. But you also get some of the most memorable experiences you could possibly have as a musician playing house parties and stuff at places you hear about through friends. My personal favorite surprise was probably this place called Trash Mountain in Murfreesboro, TN. Every band should stop there if they have the chance. (Unfortunately Trash Mountain is no more… Though we hope everyone will keep Doin’ It Yourself!)

Anyway, now that we have professionals helping us with that stuff everything become(s) a lot less erratic and we’re able to work together as a band with fewer distractions and more confidence. I think that’s the thing to appreciate about our situation in 2012 and that’s basically everything I could’ve ever hoped for.

This week you get to meet Chess Hubbard from UR Chicago! Chess runs UR Chicago Online, is co-founder of Life During Wartime (Chicago’s longest running indie dance party), and is one half of Cenob1te (EDM duo) and Moneypenny (electro-pop duo). When she’s not creating and/or promoting music, art, and nerdery, she enjoys hockey, RPGs, and Magic: The Gathering.

What is a personality trait in others that really irritates you?
There are so many, but if I had to choose one it would be humble bragging. Social media has really put a spotlight on humble bragging. Everywhere I turn, someone is posting a humble brag! Make it stop!

If the average human life span was 40 years, how would you live your life differently?
I already live my life like I might die at any time, which is why I didn’t choose a very conventional route…

What would you like your last meal be?
I would hope that it consisted of a lot of various grilled meats, onion rings, my mom’s mashed potatoes, fresh tropical fruits, and a dessert of rice krispie treats and Hawaiian shaved ice. Damnit, now I am hungry.

If you could have any non-traditional pet, what would it be?
A shark. Right now I am into great hammerheads, but I also like blue, bull, tiger, and great whites as well.

What upcoming event are you pumped for?
Dead Fame BASS!

JMA Promotions shares some music industry news:
Over the last week we had Ryan Carey travel to Portland for the Little Hurricane concert. Their first time in Portland and a sold out club of 300 due to the support from KNRK radio. If you’re not watching or listening to Little Hurricane we recommend it.

We caught Class Actress once again in Los Angeles at the Echo. We’ve now seen Elizabeth and her band several times. They keep getting better and better. A packed club as well.

Rachel McClusky performed her showcase for the music supervisors at Paramount Pictures last Thursday “on the lot”. She was accompanied by songwriter and percussionist Jay Ollero and guitarist Keaton Simon. We think there will be some film placement coming out of this as they really nailed the 5 songs/25 minute set. Watch this girl and her upcoming shows in Nashville, Dayton, and Chicago all in the next 30 days including opening for Lupe Fiasco.

Finally, it was Grammy week in Los Angeles. Some of us were there and always the most exciting week of the year. We saw Bruce Springsteen’s rehearsal as part of a sneak preview on Friday, and attended the cool Paramount friends and family party watching Fitz and the Tantrums as DJ’s! The McClusky girls went to the Grammy’s and reported back on the spectacular night for Adele, Foo Fighters, Bon Iver, Kanye etc.

Really can’t talk about the entire week without mentioning the sadness all through the entertainment industry on the death of Whitney Houston Saturday. It happens all too often where one of our icons’ life is shortened through a tragic situation. The press coverage was respectful but nonetheless it was still hugely tragic.

If this week is anywhere near back to normal, then it’s about Valentine’s Day, Andrew Bell at SPACE, Sharon Van Etten at Lincoln Hall, and Flogging Molly at the Aragon. See you next week.

Ah, Valentines Day, love, coupling, smooches… ’tis the season. Christian lore and Wikipedia tells us that St. Valentine himself was arrested and imprisoned after being caught marrying Christian couples. Apparently helping out Christians was such a big no-no in Rome at the time, that Val was stoned and beaten with clubs; when that failed to kill him, he was publicly beheaded as warning to those who would disobey the emperor….now who wants chocolates and a prix fixe!? Regardless of why we celebrate the day, Do312’s got some decapi-tastic (yep I said it) events for you and your loved one(s) so forget the Garfield card and the Whitman’s sampler, express your bonds by going out and getting your special someone well fed, entertained, and shit-faced on a weekday. We can think of no better way to say… amore.

The krautrock-influenced quartet from Brighton, England enshrouds their listeners in a fun spirited medley of sounds that recall and expand upon the origins of modern day electronic dance music. However, rather than hiding behind laptops and spacebars the groups pronounced musicality shines in a live setting with their passionate instrumentalism. Fortunately for Fujiya & Miyagi Chicago’s most recognized music blog & global espouser, Pitchfork, was there in 2006 to praise their incredible sophomore LP Transparent Things. Giving it a quaking & propelling 8.3 on the forks “Schreiber Scale”. From the onset of critical acclamation the group gained momentum, thusly producing 2008’s charting Lightbulbs and 2011’s pragmatistic Ventriloquizzing. Utilizing this drive they have charged forth touring through & through. The band was kind enough to take time out of their busy tour schedule to talk with us about everything and anything while in Chicago a few weeks back.

DO312 - How has tour been, any crazy stories?

Fujiya & Miyagi - So far, so good. We are around 6 shows in now. We haven’t had much time for mucking about, as the schedule has been so tight. Nothing crazy to report yet, although a few (members) of the group have begun to show signs of slightly odd behavior, similar to rain man.

DO312 – When on the road what is it that you miss most about home? Do any of you bring little trinkets or reminders of home, if so what are they?

F&M - I obviously miss my 14-month-old son, Riley and my girlfriend Anna. I get sent photos every day, which is nice. I imagine matt might bring something that would remind him of home, like a favorite teddy or something, but I have no proof that he does.

DO312 - What’s your favorite part about touring in the States? Least favorite?

F&M - I like seeing friends that we’ve met on previous tours and going to record stores. I got Live Evil by Miles Davis at Academy Records in Brooklyn, which I was pleased about. Playing shows is pretty good too. Sometimes it’s hard to digest them at the time and it’s only a few months afterwards that I get tour flashbacks. My least favorite is ordering food and being asked how I would like every minute thing on the plate. I find it really annoying.

DO312 - There was three years between the release of Lightbulb (2008) and Ventriloquizzing (2011) was there a reason for this gap in time? Was it merely the writing process, touring, and such? Or was this purposed to better approach the writing/recording process? Explain.

F&M – I became a father for the first time and so did Steve, whose daughter is eleven days older than my son. We put back the lp release a year because of this. We also took our time and tried to make a different record than we have before, whether we have or not is a different matter, but that was the objective. We did tour Lightbulbs quite a bit too.

DO312 – What was it like working with Thom Monahan? What did he bring to this record that may have not been there had you not recorded with him? How was it recording in California as supposed to Brighton, any good stories from the recording process?

F&M - I loved working with Thom. I think we all learned a lot from him, in terms of processes and his general ideas. He’s excellent at capturing sounds. The drums sound great on Ventriloquizzing as Thom spent a lot of time on them. We demoed the songs before we got on the plane but quite a few elements changed whilst recording. It was our first time recording a record away from home, as well as recording on consecutive days. We previously spread recordings out over a long period with gaps in.

DO312 – This album, like you’re past albums, has a good amount of assertions & criticisms about modern consumption… Is this a comic or thoughtful relief? And are these born of observation(s) or experience(s)? Please explain.

F&M – I’m not trying to be funny, so I suppose it is based on observations.

I think a lot of people are full of shit so my lyrics on this record are probably a reflection of that. I think in the future I’ll go back to a more fragmented approach to writing as I think it can be distracting from the music.

DO312 - Are you able to write songs while on tour? If so, what songs have been written this way? Or is it to stressful and such?

F&M – We never have been able too, but I think we are going to have to learn to do that as the days have shrunk since becoming a dad. I would like to write more spontaneously as I think we are at our best when we work that way.

DO312 - What’s on the docket for 2012? A new LP or EP? Can you give us any insider info?

F&M – When we get back home we are going to make an electronic record. It’s going to be faster and less song based and have messed up noises on it.

DO312 - What’s your favorite part about playing Chicago, any great Chicago memories?

F&M - I like the cat that lives at the Empty Bottle. We haven’t been there for a while so I hope it’s still doing ok. We saw Yoko Ono at some Internet blogs festival and that was great, and drove back to the hotel in her limousine. We didn’t steal it. It was all above board.

Here is this week’s dose from Chicago’s Tastemakers! Each week we check in with our 60+ Chicago movers and shakers to see what’s going on around town. Stay tuned each week to get each week’s wrap and next week’s view!

Our weekly Tastemaker Spotlight is going to help you lovely people get to know our Tastemakers a little bit better, so they’re more than just a name online bringing you the hottest events the city has to offer!

This week you get to meet TEEN WITCH! TEEN WITCH is Zain Curtis; Digital artist extraordinaire, DJ and curator of CULT, in conjunction with Stardust at Berlin Nightclub held the last Thursday of every month. He’s recently created the successful TEEN WITCH Magazine, a zine that puts BOP and J-14 through a kaleidoscope, aiming to honor and give praise to the gay and trans youth underground scene. Essentially art-based, TEEN WITCH is formed by sub-cultures, the Internet, Nickelodeon Magazine and childhood nostalgia.

If happiness was the national currency, what kind of work would make you rich?
Dancing is such a euphoria release and you have to be really comfortable to dance and let go when you’re around other people. I like to think that I bring a lot of happiness with my DJ sets and the parities I throw. It’s all very enriching after the hangover.

If you could offer a newborn child only one piece of advice, what would it be?
The world sucks.

Is it easier to forgive or forget?
I’m the most forgetful person so that comes naturally to me. It’s kind of confusing because sometimes I forget that I forgave someone.

Should toilet paper be rolled over or under?
Rolled over, forever.

What new mixes do you have to share with us?

Which was exciting because it was their first show since slaying beats with kinetic reach at North Coast Music Festival last Labor Day. When we interviewed the guys they had informed us that they were hard at work getting ready to release a new EP entitled, Here We Sit. Which at the time was slated for an undisclosed release date. Since they’ve been busy at work collaborating with an impressive roster of artists such as Hey Champ, Golden Bug, Chilly Gonzales and Edwin van Cleef to name a few. Naturally, everyone here at DO312 was excited to hear the new tracks… And today my friends we get the first taste of the new extended play, Here We Sit, with the very first single, “By Surprise”. The song is a bodacious blend of electro grooves beset by a hook enshrouded in POP sensibilities. This is the Gemini Club track that certainly will grab the attention of the populace; with it’s simply scintillating rhythm one is reassured of a good time. Without a doubt these kids are laying down live electronica that is distinctly engrained in the electronic dance music ideals of Chicago. We cannot wait to hear the rest of the album, for this teaser has tantalized. Check out this free download from the group… Also, make sure to keep your eyes and ears aware that this sick-wit-it EP Here We Sit drops on April 17th. However, you can pre-order Here We Sit by clicking HERE!

And check out our interview with Gemini Club…

Here is this week’s dose from Chicago’s Tastemakers! Each week we check in with our 60+ Chicago movers and shakers to see what’s going on around town. Stay tuned each week to get each week’s wrap and next week’s view!

Our weekly Tastemaker Spotlight is going to help you lovely people get to know our Tastemakers a little bit better, so they’re more than just a name online bringing you the hottest events the city has to offer!

This week you get to meet Stephanie Katsaros from Bright Beat! Stephanie is Principal of Bright Beat – a passion turned consulting business/website that grew out of her 14 years in radio and 14 months of global adventures. She keeps busy with development, assessment and promotion of award-winning “green” initiatives at entertainment venues and events, while hitting as many concerts and festivals as possible. Her event coverage has been featured on radio, TV and digital outlets around the world. And her taste in music is as eclectic as her interview catalog, which spans from Ana Tijoux to Liz Phair, Jon Spencer to Steve Earle, Col Bruce Hampton to Kareem Abdul Jabar.

What would you like your last meal to be?
Served to me on a beach, fresh caught fish and fresh picked veggies, with all the fixins. For dessert, fudgey pot brownie a la mode. To drink, champagne and good beer. With a hammock nearby and some guy fanning me if I’m hot.

If the average human life span was 40 years, how would you live your life differently?
I’d probably exercise less, party more. Though I can’t imagine who would be running the world?

What is a personality trait in others that really irritates you?
Height. Tall people piss me off. Except for nice tall people, who let me ride on their shoulders.

If you could have any non-traditional pet, what would it be?
Something talented that could take out the trash & recycling & get the mail. A helper monkey?

What is your favorite Bright Beat post from the past month?
con·cert — I enjoyed reliving my musical memories of 2011.

1st Ward Alderman, Proco “Joe” Moreno is an exuberant Chicagoan. Whether he’s jogging in Wicker Park, or out enjoying the festivities of his musically and artistically oriented ward; he is always approachable. Engrossed with getting to know his constituents, their small businesses, and the community as a whole, his open door policy towards community organization and his drive to better his community at large make him an admirable cog in a sometimes cloudy machine. From his first day on the job in March of 2010 he has strived to impact his neighborhood and it’s residents from the roots up. And he certainly has. The Alderman was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to sit down with DO312 and discuss many wonderful developments in the 1st Ward. As well as let us in on his love of punk rock, his desire to keep Wicker Park as the cultural hub of Chicago, and to inform us of who will be headlining this years 2nd Annual Green Music Festival.

DO312 - We had a blast at Green Music Festival this past year and we are looking forward to 2012. Can you explain a little bit about the purpose of the festival and what you would like people to take from it?

Alderman Moreno - First and foremost, it’s for people to enjoy our neighborhood and spend money in our businesses. We have a lot of these (and I’d argue the best) festivals throughout the summer. Green Music Fest was a great way to emphasize a positive message to the attendees and showcase how we’re at the forefront of innovation.

DO312 - Are there any new programs or initiatives for this year’s festival?

Alderman Moreno - We’re still looking at ways to make it “more green” or more “effectively green.” These debates are continuing in the community and hopefully we’re bringing in some new expertise for 2012.

DO312 - After last years incredible line-up with big time indie-rock headliners that included the likes of Les Savy Fav, The Thermals, and Yo La Tengo… Who can we expect to play in 2012? Any clues?

Alderman Moreno – Dinosaur Jr. I hope… more to come.

DO312 - You have stated that Yo La Tengo is, “if not my favorite band… one of my top bands of all time.” What is your top Yo La Tengo song and why?

Alderman Moreno - This incredible band remains as relevant as always… They have the unique ability of being true artists, simplifying their art at times, and complicating it when necessary. It’s truly difficult to pick a “top song” from their expansive collection. I’ll say anything from the Elctr-o-Pura album. The reason being… beauty meets sonic assault.

DO312 - In doing our homework we have read that you are big fan of Minor Threat and that you have the album “Complete Discography” on your office wall, is this true and if so what is your favorite song?

Alderman Moreno – This is true. At 13, I was listening to Minor Threat and people thought we (my friends and I) were weird. Didn’t care… they spoke to us and still do. I was Straight Edge for a bit growing up so I’d pick that song… but the intro to “We’re just a Minor Threat” is hard to replace.

DO312 - What was your favorite show of 2011?

Alderman Moreno – It’s a tie between Wild Flag at Wicker Park Fest and Yo La Tengo at Green Music Fest.

DO312 - Which band/song has the most play(s) on your iTunes?

Alderman Moreno - “Icky Thump” by the White Stripes is tied with “Radio Daze” by the The Roots.

DO312 - In terms of music what are you most looking forward to in 2012?

Alderman Moreno – New releases from Jack White. As well as the ability to still be able walk to Empty Bottle, Double Door, and Subterranean to see some great shows.

DO312 - How about in regards to the 1st Ward, any new programs or initiatives that you are excited for your constituency to be involved in/with?

Alderman Moreno - I think Green Music Fest had a terrific first year on Damen Avenue and will have an even better 2012. Also, anyone that knows a young girl who is (or isn’t) interested in Punk Music— they should check out Girls Rock Chicago! My daughter did their camp last summer and it was phenomenal and the camp is in the 1st Ward (Josephinum High School).

This week you get to meet Christian Picciolini from JBTV! Christian is General Manager, President and Emmy-nominated Executive Producer of JBTV, Chicago’s longest-running, most-respected rock & roll music television show. Founder and owner of Chicago-based artist management and development firm Goldmill Group (The Frantic, The Briggs, Flatfoot 56, Treaty Of Paris, State And Madison, Urbanites, Koo Koo Kanga Roo), and Founder and Owner of punk rock record label Sinister Muse. Rock committee member of National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (Grammys).

What is the funniest movie you’ve seen?
I still get a kick out of watching Friday or Blues Brothers. Classics.

What is your favorite sport?
I’m a huge fan of European soccer, especially Italian Serie A soccer. I grew up as an athlete that played soccer, football and baseball, so I’m a sports fan in general, but soccer is really my passion. I also love professional boxing.

What is your favorite type of art?
Concert poster art is something that I actually have been doing as a hobby for years. I’ve designed hundreds of tour posters for bands like Flatfoot 56, The Frantic, Dead Town Revival, Treaty of Paris and Street Dogs. I love collecting rock posters and art from people like Coop and Jim Evans (aka T.A.Z.). It’s a great mix of folk art and pop art and am fascinated by the mix of art and typography.

What do you want to be doing in five years?
My strategy when I came on to JBTV as General Manager and Executive Producer was to transform the already iconic weekly TV show into a 24-hour entertainment media company that showcased amazing new artists and allowed music fans to discover great new music anytime they wanted (24×7 and on-demand), anywhere that they wanted to consume it (TV, radio, new media, smart phone, tablet, web), on any platform they wanted to consume it (broadcast, satellite, cable, Internet, radio, cloud). In 2 years, the plan is right on track and we’ve just announced we’re going live on the NBC Nonstop channel in 14 US markets (Chicago, LA, NY, SF, DC, Philadelphia, Miami, Dallas and more). In 5 years, I hope to solidify the plan even further and find more ways to make artists partners in their content and offer them a new revenue stream that right now doesn’t really exist for them. I call it Motown 2.0 or Music Industry 2.0.

What upcoming event are you excited for?
I am very excited to be a part of a great charity event this Sunday, January 29th at Double Door (click “I Like It” for a chance to win tickets!) in Chicago. The event is called Fashion.Music.Hope and being presented by Seer Outfitters, The Kyle Korver Foundation (Chicago Bulls #26) and Black Label Booking. The event will feature performances by Barcelona and Gemini Club and all proceeds from the night will go to benefit 3 local Chicago charities, including a non-profit that I co-founded called Life After Hate. It’s all for a great cause.

That one thing is recognition. To be loved and supported by your peers in your local scene. Especially by those who have traversed the rigid slopes of music to stand a top the lonely summit. The Luck of Eden Hall has received that sought over courtship from none other than the Smashing Pumpkins himself, Billy Corgan. Who said this about the band, “An excellent psychedelic band!”. If that’s not a ringing endorsement then I don’t know what is! Make sure to check the band out tonight at the Abbey Pub for their record release. The band is releasing a new LP called, Butterfly Revolutions Vol. 2, which is another incredible record from these venerable psychedelic rockers. Not only will they melt your face with their eviscerating vibes, but they will also warm your bones as the snow dumps all over our fair city. Opening are the kick ass post-punks I Lost Control and the power-poppers The Bright White.
